What is a computer chip?
A computer chip (also called a semiconductor) is a tiny part that works like a brain for electronics. Chips are inside phones, cars, video games, washing machines and much more.
Chips are built on wafers. A wafer is a round, super-thin slice of silicon. The new wafers made in Sherman are 300 millimeters wide. That's almost 12 inches, about the size of a large pizza!
What is Texas Instruments building in Sherman?
Texas Instruments (TI) started making chips at its new Sherman factory, called SM1, on December 17, 2025. It is built to make tens of millions of chips every day. Most of them go into cars and machines in factories.
The site has room for up to four connected factories, which will be built when they are needed. TI says the site will create about 3,000 new jobs, plus thousands more jobs at other businesses in town.
What does GlobalWafers do in Sherman?
GlobalWafers makes the silicon wafers that chips are built on. It opened its Sherman factory in May 2025, and it is the company's main American home. It plans to hire up to 650 engineers, technicians and workers by the end of 2028.
